27-Year-Old Mobile Dental Sterilization Trailer

For nearly six decades, the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC has operated the largest civilian mobile dental clinic program in the United States, second only to the U.S. military. Delivering millions of dollars in free care to underserved children, low-income families, and veterans across Southern and Central California, the program also serves as a mandatory, formative clinical rotation for every USC dental student.

At the center of this massive fleet is the Instrument Management System (IMS) unit—the moving workhorse housing the sterilization equipment, materials, and clinical supplies needed to support up to 30 mobile dental chairs simultaneously in the field.

After 27 years of continuous service, the program’s legacy trailer reached the limits of its operational lifetime. With aging thermal management, restricted floor space, and wearing structural components, the old unit threatened to become an operational bottleneck.

To overcome this, USC launched the Power of 1,000 Campaign, an initiative led by alumni, faculty leaders (including Associate Deans Roseann Mulligan and Glenn Clark), and philanthropic partners like the Envista Smile Project and the Maurice Amado Foundation. The campaign successfully surpassed its $1 million target – raising over $1.14M – and set the stage to acquire a brand-new, purpose-built replacement. USC selected Aleph Group Inc. to engineer and build the new unit.
